Residents to Challenge Drumcree Parade Decision in High Court

A residents' group on the Garvaghy Road is preparing to challenge the Parades Commission's decision to allow an Orange Order parade on the predominantly nationalist route. The Garvaghy Road Residents' Coalition is applying to the High Court in Belfast for a judicial review, expressing anger and shock over the ruling. Breandán Mac Cionnaith, a representative of the coalition, stated that the decision creates the grounds for confrontation after 28 years of avoiding it.

"The feelings of people in the local community here, you can describe them as shock, and you can also describe them as anger," Mac Cionnaith said. "After 28 years of this community being able to avoid confrontation, the parades commission by their decision is creating the grounds for a confrontation."

DUP MLA Carla Lockhart urged residents not to succumb to "hysteria," asserting that the parade of "thirty-five men walking down a road silently with no bands in an orderly fashion" poses no threat. She added that these individuals "work, live and do business in this community" and called on Sinn Féin to "show political leadership and ensure calm remains across the community."

However, Sinn Féin President Mary-Lou McDonald described the decision as "utterly reckless" and indicative of a "complete disregard" for the rights of the Garvaghy Road community. She warned of the implications and consequences of such recklessness and appealed for intervention from figures including the prime minister and taoiseach to rectify the situation.
