A resident who moved to Sydney two years ago is now leaving the city, citing a series of persistent issues including unaffordable housing, severe traffic congestion, and the poor quality of rental properties. Despite acknowledging Sydney's natural beauty, the individual found that the drawbacks outweighed the aesthetic appeal.

Problems cited include battling traffic, dealing with property managers over issues like mold, and the high cost of basic necessities. The move to Sydney was prompted by a teenager's desire for a different educational environment. The resident traded a spacious home in Perth for a small apartment in Sydney that lacked air conditioning and struggled with heat, often reaching the outside temperature of 42C (107.6F).

Living on Sydney's Northern Beaches, an area perceived by some as affluent and insular, presented its own set of challenges. The resident noted a perceived locals-only mentality in some social settings and noted the difficulty of navigating the area due to its geography and limited access points.

Public transportation, while considered better than Perth's system, comes with a high price tag. Sydney's public transport is ranked as the second most expensive globally, after London. Driving in Sydney was described as a frustrating experience, characterized by aggressive drivers, numerous potholes, and unpredictable traffic, particularly on major routes like the M1 and the Sydney Harbour Bridge.

The living situation was further complicated by issues such as recurring mold, ongoing renovations in adjacent properties, and a lack of hot water. A homeless individual was also reported to have slept in the apartment hallway during winter. The resident also experienced damage to their vehicle, both while parking and when it was hit while parked on the street.

Despite the negative experiences, the resident did acknowledge some positive aspects of Sydney, including pleasant beach walks, access to national parks, and the enjoyment of ocean pools. However, the cumulative effect of the financial and emotional toll led to the decision to return to Perth. The resident stated that while Sydney is a great city, the cost of living and the daily challenges made it unsustainable in the long term.
