Rescued Piglet Thrives as Beloved Animal Sanctuary Resident

A six-month-old piglet, affectionately named Tom, is now living a life of comfort and companionship after a dramatic rescue. Found barely a day old on the side of a road with his umbilical cord still attached, Tom has become a beloved resident of the Farm Animal Rescue Sanctuary in Wolverton, Stratford-upon-Avon.

Carole Webb, 82, a retired veterinary nurse who runs the sanctuary, believes Tom may have fallen from a transport lorry during his mother's birth. A member of the public discovered the tiny piglet and kept him warm overnight before bringing him to Ms. Webb.

Initially about the size of a kitten, Tom was hand-reared indoors, requiring constant warmth from hot water bottles and heat pads. He also sustained an injury to his leg, which was swollen and caused him to become shaky. Ms. Webb and her team monitored him closely, providing care over several hours.

Six months later, Tom has grown significantly, now weighing between 150 and 200 kilograms. He has adapted well to his new environment, spending his days roaming a three-acre field. Tom is known for his friendly demeanor, often seen interacting with the chickens and cats at the sanctuary, whom he considers his friends. He is described as having a personality akin to a dog, responding when called, following people around, and enjoying a treat ball designed for canine use.

Tom has a fondness for cuddly toys and has had them since he arrived at the sanctuary. He is particularly noted for his enjoyment of belly rubs. While he is too boisterous to be housed with the sheep, he has his own living space and shares his field with his feline and avian companions.

The sanctuary, which cares for approximately 350 animals including sheep, cats, chickens, and another pig, is currently fundraising to acquire more land to continue its operations.
