Jinny Lu, a 6-year-old pug rescued from South Korea’s dog meat market, has been crowned the winner of the annual “World’s Ugliest Dog” competition held in Santa Rosa, California. The event, which took place on August 14, celebrated canine companions and promoted animal adoption.

This was not Jinny Lu’s first attempt at the title; she competed four times before securing first place. She was adopted by Michelle Grady four years ago through her pug rescue organization. Grady stated that Jinny Lu enjoys the competition and the event’s mission. Organizers noted that Jinny Lu also serves as an ambassador for rescue dogs, visiting schools and care facilities to promote the message that every pet deserves a chance, regardless of their appearance.

Beyond the title, Jinny Lu received $5,000 and earned a trip to New York City for an appearance on the “Today” show. She will also be featured on limited-edition MUG Root Beer cans, a sponsor of the event for the third consecutive year.

The competition featured nine dogs of various breeds, including pugs, chihuahuas, and Chinese Crested mixes, from across the country and internationally. Pinky, a Chihuahua-Pomeranian mix, took second place, winning $3,000. Otto, a 2-year-old Chihuahua mix with a cleft lip and palate, placed third and received $2,000.

Hosted by the Sonoma-Marin Agriculture Association, the contest, now in its 50th year, emphasizes the importance of adoption and finding forever homes for all dogs. "This event has always been about celebrating the dogs that might otherwise be overlooked," said Mandy Clendenen, CEO of the Sonoma-Marin Agricultural Association. "We’re incredibly proud of what the World’s Ugliest Dog Contest has become and grateful to have partners like MUG Root Beer who understand the heart behind it."
