Virginia's U.S. Senate race is taking shape after a period of delays, with Bert Mizusawa clinching the Republican nomination. Mizusawa will challenge incumbent Sen. Mark Warner, a Democrat seeking his fourth term, in a contest that also features independent candidate Mark Moran.
Mizusawa, who has not previously held public office, has a background in government, the intelligence community, and the military. He is a former Major General and previously served as a senior advisor for national security technology and business integration at the Central Intelligence Agency. He also advised on foreign policy and national security for Donald Trump's transition team in 2016. Mizusawa's campaign priorities include addressing the national debt, affordability, and supporting the military.
Moran is running as an independent after an initial bid as a Democrat. He garnered attention for betting on his own campaign on the prediction market platform Kalshi, resulting in a fine. Moran stated that the bet was a marketing strategy to gain attention for his ideas.
Sen. Warner is considered a strong incumbent, having won his previous election by approximately 12 points. He holds a significant position on the Senate Intelligence Committee. The race is not currently identified by national Republicans as a top opportunity for a party flip.
