Rep. Tim Burchett (R-Tenn.) has spoken out against what he describes as the "thug treatment" of WNBA player Caitlin Clark, following a recent on-court incident. Burchett characterized the fouls against Clark as "trashy" and "pathetic," suggesting the league is not adequately protecting its star player.
The controversy stems from an incident on June 24, 2026, where Phoenix Mercury forward Alyssa Thomas shoved Clark in the neck before stepping over her. The play, initially uncalled, was later reviewed and resulted in a Flagrant 2 foul and a one-game suspension for Thomas. "It is supposed to be a physical game -- it's not supposed to be a wrestling match. Take it to the pro wrestling association," Burchett told TMZ Sports.
Burchett also expressed concern over Clark's exclusion from a promotional poster for the WNBA's 30th anniversary. He noted that Clark's games have led to record-breaking attendance and viewership, making her absence from the poster questionable. "I think something's up, I think everybody knows what's up. And they're going to lose," Burchett stated, speculating that a European league might recruit Clark if the situation within the WNBA does not improve.
Further adding to the tension, the Phoenix Mercury posted a social media message that appeared to mock the foul on Clark. The post featured a cartoon of a player on the floor with the caption, "DE-WANNA PIECE OF THIS?!?". The message seemed to be a play on the name of DeWanna Bonner, who is now with the Mercury after a previous stint with the Fever.
This incident and the subsequent reactions highlight a contentious period for the Indiana Fever and their opponents, with multiple games reportedly marked by significant tension.
