Republic of Ireland Could Face Undetermined Sanctions for Not Playing Israel Match

The Republic of Ireland's national football team faced potential "undetermined" sanctions from UEFA had they refused to play their Nations League match against Israel on Sunday, according to FAI president Paul Cooke. The match, played in Hungary, saw neither the Israeli anthem played with heads bowed nor a handshake between opposing captains.

The fixtures, part of the Nations League Group B3 and held at neutral venues, have been a point of contention since February due to the ongoing conflict in Gaza. A campaign titled "Stop The Game," organized by Irish Sport for Palestine, had urged the Irish team to withdraw.

Players from the Republic of Ireland did not exchange pennants with their Israeli counterparts, and handshakes were also omitted. Cooke confirmed that standard punishments for failing to fulfill a fixture could have been augmented by "other sanctions undetermined" by UEFA, drawing a parallel to recent penalties levied on Southampton in England.

There were significant doubts on Saturday morning about whether the game would proceed. Players reportedly engaged in a meeting at their hotel after goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu withdrew from the squad in protest, with several other players expressing concerns. Ultimately, a player vote passed by a "significant majority" to play the match.

Cooke commended the players and manager Heimir Hallgrímsson for their decision to play, stating that fulfilling the fixture was mandated by the FAI's members and board. The second match between the two nations is scheduled for October 4 in Backa Topola, Serbia.

Regarding a November letter from the FAI proposing Israel's expulsion from international competitions, Cooke noted that UEFA is still considering the matter. He also indicated that he had spoken with Austria and Kosovo, the other teams in Group B3, who reaffirmed their commitment to playing their respective matches against Israel.
