Report: Mavericks Allegedly Ran Smear Campaign to Justify Doncic Trade
Allegations suggest Dallas sought to tarnish Luka Doncic's image to rationalize his February 2025 trade to the Los Angeles Lakers.
The Dallas Mavericks reportedly orchestrated a smear campaign to justify the blockbuster trade of star player Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers in February 2025, according to reporting by The Athletic.
Following the shocking deal, reports surfaced in Los Angeles questioning Doncic's weight, work ethic, and other personal matters. These claims emerged as Doncic began a new chapter with the Lakers, a franchise that has reportedly seen significant benefits from his arrival.
Doncic has since worked to counter the negative narratives. He has reportedly undergone a physical transformation, even gracing the cover of Men's Health magazine. This season, he aims to prove his capabilities to Lakers fans and the wider league. Despite his efforts and a strong start to the season, including a notable performance against the Golden State Warriors, Doncic did not receive any votes in an anonymous poll of NBA general managers predicting the league's Most Valuable Player.
The Lakers, potentially bolstered by Doncic's presence, are aiming to be contenders in the competitive Western Conference. Doncic has publicly expressed his desire to retire with the Lakers and has made his commitment to the team clear in a letter to the city of Los Angeles penned before the season opener.
