Illinois Governor JB Pritzker's home was entered by a repeat offender over the July 4th holiday weekend, an incident that has intensified criticism from Republicans and policy analysts regarding the state's criminal justice reforms.
Dwayne Cortez Milton was arrested on the evening of July 4th after allegedly scaling a fence and entering Pritzker's backyard. He faces a trespassing charge but was released pending trial. Court documents indicate Milton pleaded guilty on July 7th in a separate theft case and remains in custody. He was reportedly under electronic monitoring at the time of the trespassing incident and has an extensive criminal history.
Pritzker has faced consistent criticism for his administration's public safety policies, which include the elimination of cash bail through the SAFE-T Act, opposition to mandatory minimum sentencing expansions, and increased parole opportunities. Illinois became the first state to abolish cash bail statewide when Pritzker signed the SAFE-T Act in 2021.
Opponents of the SAFE-T Act contend that it hinders the detention of repeat offenders before trial, while supporters assert the law prevents financial status from dictating pre-trial release.
Following the incident at Pritzker's residence, critics voiced their concerns on social media. Darren Bailey, a GOP Illinois gubernatorial candidate, wrote on X, "A 10-time convicted felon slips his electronic monitor. The court isn't told for days. He's found in JB Pritzker's own backyard. How many more warnings does Illinois need before we admit the SAFE-T Act is failing."
Brian Costin, state director for Americans for Prosperity IL, stated, "No one deserves to have their home violated like that. I hope you will take reforming the SAFE-T Act more seriously now." Mark Weyermuller, a contributor to Illinois Review, commented, "The Governor is a victim of his own soft on crime policy. He has blood on his hands as many convicted felons continue to commit violent crimes daily."
The incident occurs amidst ongoing friction between Pritzker and former President Donald Trump over their contrasting approaches to crime. Trump has frequently criticized Chicago's crime rates and Pritzker's policies, urging the governor to adopt a tougher stance. Pritzker, in turn, has defended the state's sanctuary policies and accused federal immigration agents of targeting immigrants rather than criminals.
