U.S. Rep. Tom Tiffany, R-Wis., and the pilot of his plane were treated and released from a Wisconsin hospital after the aircraft made an emergency water landing in Lake Wausau on Saturday night.
The incident occurred around 9 p.m. as the plane was approaching Wausau Downtown Airport. According to Tiffany's social media post, the aircraft lost power.
"The pilot made an emergency water landing in Lake Wausau," Tiffany stated on social media. "After landing, we called 911. As the plane began to submerge, we exited the aircraft and swam to a shallow area, where we waited until emergency responders reached us by boat."
Tiffany, who is also a candidate for Wisconsin governor, reported that both he and the pilot sustained only minor injuries. He was treated for a wound above his right eye. They were released from Aspirus Wausau Hospital late Saturday night.
"I want to express my deepest gratitude to the pilot, the Wausau Fire Department, and all of the first responders who came to our aid so quickly," Tiffany wrote. "An experience like this reminds you just how precious life is."
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has stated it is investigating the incident.
