Rep. Tom Kean Jr. (R-NJ) returned to Capitol Hill on Tuesday, marking his first appearance after a 116-day absence due to an undisclosed medical issue. Kean, who represents one of the most vulnerable Republican seats in New Jersey's 7th congressional district, plans to offer "complete transparency" regarding his condition.
Kean, 57, had been absent since March 5, missing more than 140 votes. His office had previously issued a statement on June 2, indicating a transition from virtual to in-person work and a commitment to disclosing his medical situation. House Speaker Mike Johnson had previously downplayed speculation about Kean's absence, stating in early June that the issue was not "scandalous" and that Kean had asked him not to disclose the details, describing it as "not very common and not a big thing."
Before addressing the House of Representatives, Kean was seen on Capitol Hill with his wife. His return comes as Republicans are under pressure to advance their legislative agenda with a narrow majority in the House. The absence has drawn criticism from Democrats, including the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, who argue that Kean has failed to show up for his constituents. His challenger in November, Rebecca Bennett, is seen by Democrats as a strong candidate who can appeal to moderate and independent voters.
Donald Trump, who won the 7th district by one point in 2024, had previously endorsed Kean, stating he would "never let you down." However, Kean's prolonged absence has created vulnerabilities that Democrats are expected to highlight in the upcoming election. Reports from senior GOP staffers and lawmakers indicated a lack of information regarding Kean's condition and whereabouts.
Kean won his 2024 race by nearly 7 percentage points, but current market indicators suggest his opponent has a significant chance of flipping the seat. His campaign has continued to solicit funds by emphasizing the slim Republican majority in the House, while Kean's own social media has been updated without real-time photographs of his presence.
