California Rep. Ro Khanna celebrated what he described as the return of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) on election night, even as a significant wealth tax initiative he championed appeared to be failing.

“Tonight, DEI is back as America celebrated diversity and inclusion,” Khanna posted to X, formerly Twitter, on Tuesday evening. He cited several Democratic victories that he believes signal progress, including the potential for three Black governors, the first Latina governor in Texas, and the first Muslim American and gay senators. "I love this America tonight," he added.

This declaration came as California Proposition 40, a one-time 5% wealth tax on billionaires, was trending toward defeat. With approximately 60% of ballots counted, the measure was trailing with 55.6% voting against it, according to early results reported by the Associated Press. Khanna expressed his commitment to the progressive taxation cause, stating, "I’m proud of our efforts wherever we end up. I am going to be right there, first in line supporting this in the next election cycle if it doesn’t pass this one."

Khanna himself secured reelection to California's 17th Congressional District, defeating Republican challenger Ritesh Tandon. Early results showed Khanna with a significant lead, garnering 70.5% of the vote with about 48% of expected ballots tabulated.
