Rep. Thomas Massie (R-Ky.) predicted that former President Donald Trump is “in denial” about the upcoming midterm elections and will face his “comeuppance” on Election Day, anticipating a subsequent “reckoning” in the days following the vote.
Speaking on CNN, Massie stated that he does not believe Trump understands the challenges the Republican Party faces in the upcoming elections, citing Trump's social media activity as evidence of his unrepentant stance. "Somebody in the White House needs to get through to him," Massie told CNN’s Kaitlan Collins. "I think his comeuppance will happen on Election Day."
Massie drew a parallel to the 2006 midterms, when then-President George W. Bush dismissed his secretary of defense after Republicans suffered significant losses. Massie suggested that Trump might take similar actions to demonstrate he has understood the election results. "We’ll see if he does something like that and other measures to show that he got the message,” Massie said.
Massie, who previously spearheaded an effort with Democratic Rep. Ro Khanna to release documents related to Jeffrey Epstein, noted that Trump’s influence on elections has become a liability for some Republicans. He observed that while many candidates previously embraced Trump’s support during their primaries, they are now attempting to distance themselves from him ahead of the general election due to his low approval ratings. "There’s going to be a reckoning,” Massie reiterated. “So they’re running from him on this and other issues — like the war.”
