U.S. Rep. Marcy Kaptur, 80, was hospitalized Sunday after the vehicle she was traveling in was struck in a hit-and-run incident in Toledo, Ohio. A spokesperson for the congresswoman confirmed she sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was "active, alert, and being treated."
Kaptur, the longest-serving woman in the House of Representatives, was on her way to church when the collision occurred shortly before 11 a.m. Sunday. Her office stated she is thankful for the swift response of first responders and medical professionals.
The accident involved a black Ford Bronco and a silver sedan. According to reports, the sedan, which was a stolen vehicle, struck the Bronco Kaptur was a passenger in. The driver of the sedan fled the scene and has not yet been located, authorities said.
Witnesses reported seeing a man exit the sedan and run from the crash site. Emergency services transported two individuals to a local hospital, though details about the other person's condition have not been released.
The House of Representatives is currently not in session. Kaptur, a Democrat, is seeking re-election and previously defeated Republican challenger Derek Merrin in 2024. Merrin expressed his condolences and wished Kaptur a speedy recovery.
Authorities are continuing their investigation into the incident. Kaptur's office indicated she anticipates returning to her full schedule soon.
