Rep. Jasmine Crockett Faces Criticism for Honoring Chris Brown in Congressional Record
Lawmaker's decision to recognize the singer, who has a history of domestic violence convictions, draws sharp backlash from critics and commentators.
Rep. Jasmine Crockett, D-Texas, is facing significant online criticism for honoring musician Chris Brown by entering him into the congressional record. The move has drawn scrutiny due to Brown's well-documented history of domestic violence, including a 2009 felony assault conviction for attacking then-girlfriend Rihanna.
Critics have decried Crockett's decision as "completely vile" and "tone deaf," particularly given the prevalence of domestic violence. Investigative reporter Andrew Kerr and activist Shannon Watts were among those who highlighted Brown's past offenses, including restraining orders and other assault allegations.
Brown himself reacted to the controversy on social media, expressing displeasure that the honor had drawn negative attention. He stated that he was not the one who initiated the recognition and wished to be left alone to focus on his fans. "I have an idea how about y’all leave me the f--- alone and let me focus on the fans that spent their money to actually see and support me," Brown wrote on Instagram.
Crockett, who recently lost her bid for a Senate seat, framed the member statement as a recognition of artistry that shaped contemporary R&B and pop music. On stage at an event on Saturday, she stated, "Weeping may endure for a night, but joy comes in the morning. And right now, we are experiencing Black joy to the highest level, and I wanted to make sure we document that in the Congressional Record."
However, political strategists and commentators like Ameshia Cross and Eric Michael Garcia argued that the move was a political miscalculation. Cross noted that "Black women suffer [domestic violence] at the highest rates and often fatally," making the honor particularly insensitive. Garcia called it "absolutely disgusting to see Jasmine Crockett platform and honor an abuser of women."
Brown's history includes pleading guilty to a misdemeanor assault charge in 2013 involving another singer, Frank Ocean, and a domestic violence restraining order granted to an ex-girlfriend in 2017. More recently, he pleaded guilty to charges of striking a producer in July 2023. He is also expected to be sentenced for affray, a charge involving unlawful threat of violence.
Crockett will not be returning to the House of Representatives in the next Congress after her unsuccessful Senate campaign.
