Rep. Ilhan Omar Says She Lives 'Paycheck to Paycheck' Amid Financial Disclosure Scrutiny
The Minnesota Democrat made the comments during an interview following a federal search of her home.
Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., described herself as a member of the "working class" who lives "paycheck to paycheck" during an interview with MS NOW host Chris Hayes. Her remarks come amidst ongoing scrutiny over financial disclosures and a recent federal search of her Washington, D.C., residence.
"I mean, it’s, you know, working — working class, I guess, like paycheck to paycheck still," Omar said. "We’ve got four kids, and we live, I think, like a basic life. I have a Toyota Camry that’s from 2016."
These comments follow a search of Omar's home by Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) agents on October 12, reportedly as part of an investigation into potential immigration-related offenses. Omar has stated that she believes the search was intended to intimidate voters and has used the investigation to fundraise for her campaign.
During the interview, Omar also provided details about the federal search. She described the agents as "polite" and noted that they left her home in good condition, even folding some of her clothes. The search lasted four to five hours, and agents reportedly seized over a dozen items, including notebooks and a children’s Somali-language phrasebook.
Omar's financial situation has been a subject of discussion, particularly concerning disclosures linked to her husband, Tim Mynett. House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer, R-Ky., has raised questions about discrepancies in the reported value of assets tied to Mynett's businesses. Initially, disclosures listed assets as high as $30 million, but Omar later amended the filing, attributing the figures to an accounting error and revising the asset value to a range between $18,004 and $95,000.
A separate Justice Department investigation is reportedly examining Omar's financial disclosures. Comer has specifically pointed to Mynett's business, eStCru, a winery that has reportedly ceased operations due to fraud allegations, as a point of concern regarding the dramatic increase in reported business value.
Omar has denied any wrongdoing. Her annual congressional salary is $174,000. The financial investigation is ongoing.
