Rep. Gonzalez's Campaign Funded Travel Amidst Accusations of Rival's Extravagance
Records show Texas Democrat's campaign paid for trips to Disney, UAE, and Europe, with his wife accompanying him on several occasions.
Rep. Vicente Gonzalez, D-Texas, criticized a Republican challenger for allegedly "living the good life" on donor funds, but campaign finance records reveal his own campaign spent nearly $20,000 on travel, including trips with his wife to Disney World, the United Arab Emirates, and Europe.
In October 2025, Gonzalez publicly accused Republican Mayra Flores of using campaign money for personal travel. However, records from Gonzalez's campaign show expenditures for international and domestic trips accompanied by his wife. These include over $1,100 for a visit to Disney World in April 2025, coinciding with social media posts of him and his wife at the theme park. His campaign manager stated the Disney spending was tied to "a very important Financial Services trip" with Rep. French Hill, R-Ark., chairman of the U.S. House Committee on Financial Services.
Federal campaign finance regulations permit campaigns to cover travel expenses for candidates and, in some cases, their spouses, provided the travel is directly related to campaign activity or official duties. When personal activities are mixed with official business, the campaign is required to be reimbursed for the personal portion.
Gonzalez's campaign reported over $13,000 in airfare and hotel expenses for a 2024 trip to the UAE, which coincided with social media posts of the congressman and his wife sightseeing and staying in a luxury hotel. His campaign manager described these international trips where his wife was present as being tied to official business, citing one occasion involving a visit with the Pope.
During a 2019 trip to Morocco under the Mutual Educational and Cultural Exchange Act, Gonzalez's campaign reported paying $4,767.53 for his "spouse travel expense." In December 2024, the campaign spent $12,810 on Emirates Airlines and $359.27 at a luxury hotel in Abu Dhabi for "officially connected" CODEL expenses. Social media posts from Gonzalez showed him and his wife in Abu Dhabi around the same time, with captions referring to an "after campaign break."
Further campaign expenses include $566.67 for Swiss Air and $395 for travel expenses at a Michelin-starred restaurant in Zurich in August 2025, around the same time Gonzalez posted a photo with his wife in Switzerland. Additionally, the campaign reported a $442.41 travel expense at the Parco dei Principi Grand Hotel in Rome in 2025, the same week Gonzalez posted a photo of himself meeting the Pope.
The campaign also reported thousands of dollars in expenditures at upscale restaurants and resorts domestically. This includes approximately $4,000 at The Capital Grille in Washington, D.C., and spending at other high-end establishments. More recently, the campaign reported $1,019 at California's Ojai Valley Inn and over $1,400 at Pennsylvania's Omni Bedford Springs Resort & Spa.
Gonzalez's campaign manager, Alex Philley, stated, "Every dollar this campaign spends is legal and publicly disclosed, and these reports come straight from our own FEC filings." Philley also asserted that the spending South Texans are concerned about is related to "higher costs driven by Trump's agenda."
