A striking digital rendering that reimagines Santa Monica's Third Street Promenade as a lush green oasis has captured widespread attention online. The concept, shared by tech founder Raad Mobrem, envisions the concrete pedestrian mall transformed into a vibrant park complete with vertical gardens, abundant planters, a winding creek, and stone seating areas.
Mobrem shared the rendering on X, where it quickly gained traction, accumulating significant views and engagement. The proposal aims to address the decline in business and the challenges faced by the Promenade in recent years, including empty storefronts and a visible homeless population.
The concept flips the traditional model of an outdoor pedestrian mall, where shopping is the primary activity, into a public park that also offers shopping opportunities. Major retailers such as Zara, Apple, Urban Outfitters, and Sephora are depicted in the rendering, with their storefronts integrated around the edges of a sprawling garden.
Mobrem also developed an alternative rendering that accommodates emergency vehicle access by designating a portion of the central area for their passage. This addresses potential safety code concerns.
Once a popular retail and lifestyle destination, the Third Street Promenade has experienced a difficult period post-pandemic. In response to these challenges, city officials approved a $3 million economic development fund in March. This fund is designated for initiatives such as tenant improvement assistance, business recruitment, and capital renewal studies for the Promenade. Additionally, Santa Monica launched an "Entertainment Zone" along the Promenade last year, allowing adults to purchase and consume alcoholic beverages outdoors within a designated area.
The viral renderings offer a glimpse into potential future directions for urban public spaces, sparking conversation about how to revive struggling commercial districts through innovative design and a focus on community experience.
