Reggie Miller on Knicks' Contract Drama: 'You Hope Behind Closed Doors...'

Hall of Famer Reggie Miller has advised the New York Knicks to manage the contract situation with star Karl-Anthony Towns carefully, suggesting that unresolved negotiations could hinder their chances of repeating as champions. Miller expressed hope that the contract discussions would not become a public issue.

"You hope behind closed doors the contract stuff doesn’t become an issue," Miller said during an NBC media event in Stamford, according to Newsday. While commending the Knicks for having a "great chance of repeating," Miller cautioned that the Eastern Conference has strengthened and that the team now carries a target on its back.

The Knicks announced Friday that they would pause contract extension talks with Towns until later in the season. Miller lauded this decision as a strategic move to minimize distractions as the season approaches its Oct. 20 opening game against the 76ers.

"I like the Knicks coming out publicly and saying we’re going to table discussions until a later date," Miller stated. "That doesn’t mean they’re not going to negotiate. It basically means you guys [media] can’t ask the players about their contract situation."

Negotiations between the team and Towns have reportedly become strained due to a significant gap in their offers. The Knicks have reportedly offered a four-year deal worth approximately $200 million, while Towns is eligible for an extension worth up to $277 million over four years.

"If they want to be successful and they want to have a chance to repeat," Miller said, "you’re going to need a healthy KAT mentally. You don’t want him being a malcontent, worrying about his contract behind closed doors. Because when KAT is at his best and on board, they’re hard to beat. … I think a deal will get done. It’s going to be between the 200 and the 277 [million dollars]. So meet in the middle, sign it, and let’s move on."

Towns has expressed disappointment with the team's decision to halt negotiations, calling it "news to me" and stating he was "very disappointed, to say the least." Despite the unresolved contract talks, the player indicated his commitment to the team's goals, saying, "there’s still business to be handled," and "After 53 years, we found a way to bring this trophy back to New York, and we intend for it to stay in New York."
