Reggie and Ronnie, twin Rottweiler puppies in training with the Devon and Cornwall Police dog unit, celebrated their first birthday recently. The pair joined the unit in December 2025 at 13 weeks old and have since been trained in basic commands, scent tracking, and suspect apprehension.
These two Rottweilers are believed to be the only ones in the UK training as general-purpose police dogs. Their namesakes, identical twin gangsters Ronald and Reginald Kray, were prominent figures in London's criminal underworld during the 1950s and 1960s, involved in various offenses including murder, robbery, and extortion.
Canine development officer Paul Glennon noted Ronnie's 'fantastic tracking abilities' and explained the choice of names was to make the dogs memorable. Unlike their infamous namesakes, Reggie and Ronnie are expected to uphold the law. Reggie currently weighs approximately 37.5kg, while Ronnie weighs 38.1kg.
After completing their current training, which spans about 14 months, the dogs will be transferred to handlers for an additional three-month course. If they successfully complete their training, Reggie and Ronnie could serve as police dogs until they are eight years old.
