Refugee Advocate Nyadol Nyuon Seeks $150,000 for 'Recovery' Ahead of Departure from Australia

Nyadol Nyuon, an outspoken refugee advocate and prominent lawyer, has initiated a GoFundMe campaign seeking $150,000 to help her "rest and recover" until her planned departure from Australia in mid-2027.

Nyuon, 39, was born in an Ethiopian refugee camp in 1987 and moved to Australia at age 18 with her family after they fled Sudan's civil war. She later completed her law studies at the University of Melbourne, supported by multiple scholarships and grants. In 2022, she was awarded an Order of Australia Medal for her advocacy work on behalf of refugees. However, Nyuon has since expressed disillusionment with Australia, vowing to return her medal and renounce her citizenship.

Her decision to leave and the launch of the fundraiser are linked to her experience leading an $800,000 taxpayer-funded project aimed at improving workplace diversity. Nyuon resigned in 2025 as director of Victoria University's Sir Zelman Cowen Centre, citing alleged systematic racism, poor working conditions, and mental fatigue. She claimed the institutions involved were "racist" and used her as "corporate blackface," exposing her to "sustained psychological and emotional assault."

In her GoFundMe post, Nyuon stated that she has been unable to work for nearly two years, having been the sole income earner supporting both her household and her public advocacy work. She described being "exhausted, managing depression and trying to make space for recovery," leading to accumulated bills, mortgage arrears, and an inability to afford car insurance. The requested $150,000 is intended to cover essential costs and living expenses until mid-2027, providing stability during a period of recovery.

Nyuon initially set the fundraising goal at $150,000 but later changed it to $30,000 on Monday night. As of that time, over $5,800 had been raised. She indicated that $50,000 from the fundraiser would address mortgage arrears, overdue household bills, and car insurance, while the remaining $100,000 would support essential living costs until mid-2027. She also mentioned being involved in a lengthy, private process seeking review of a difficult professional matter that has taken a significant emotional and financial toll.

Nyuon's public statements have sometimes drawn controversy. Earlier last month, she stated on ABC's National Immigration Forum that she had "no intention of assimilating" with Australians and losing her cultural identity. She argued that Australia has historically been multicultural and that the concept of a singular "white culture" being threatened is a misrepresentation, emphasizing the distinctness of various European cultures. This stance led to a clash with former deputy prime minister John Anderson during the forum.
