Reform UK Plagued by Multiple Resignations Amidst Financial and Legal Scrutiny

Reform UK is experiencing significant internal disruption with the resignation of three local councillors in Durham and the departure of its Welsh leader, Dan Thomas, who was arrested on suspicion of assault and controlling or coercive behavior.

Lyndsey Fox, Nicole Brown, and Paul Sexton have quit the party to sit as independents on Durham County Council. These departures bring the total number of councillors who have left Reform on that local authority to 16 since the May 2023 elections, when the party secured 65 seats to gain a majority. Fox cited "growing concerns about the culture" within the party and stated she had raised a "serious safeguarding" issue with leadership that she subsequently reported to the police and the Police and Crime Commissioner. She expressed disappointment that the party's response focused on "political numbers and possible roles within the council" rather than addressing the safeguarding concern.

Andrew Husband, Reform's leader in Durham, criticized the departing councillors, stating they had "let their residents down" and "conned them using Reform colours." He added that they had "betrayed the many members who spent their time and money to help get them elected."

Separately, Dan Thomas announced his resignation as Reform UK's leader in Wales for "personal reasons" but intends to remain a Member of the Senedd. Gwent Police confirmed that a 45-year-old man was arrested on September 13 on suspicion of assault and engaging in controlling or coercive behavior and has been bailed pending further inquiries. Thomas asserted he had done nothing wrong and did not want the "coming headlines to be a distraction" from the work of the Senedd team.

These recent events add to existing pressures on Reform UK and its leader, Nigel Farage. The party's finances are under scrutiny following a donations row that surfaced during the party's annual conference earlier in September. Detectives from the Metropolitan Police are investigating allegations that senior Reform figures discussed methods to disguise donations from foreign sources. The party denies any wrongdoing and has pledged full cooperation with the investigation. Farage himself is also subject to an investigation by Parliament's standards watchdog concerning a £5 million gift he received from billionaire Christopher Harborne.
