Red Wings Fans Boo Dylan Larkin During Season Opener Amid Trade Request Fallout

Detroit Red Wings fans expressed their displeasure with star center Dylan Larkin by booing him during the team's season opener against the Rangers on Friday.

Larkin, who is currently sidelined with an upper-body injury, was shown on the video board at Little Caesars Arena for player introductions and was met with a chorus of jeers from the crowd. The hostile reaction from the fanbase appears to be a direct consequence of Larkin's trade request made earlier this summer, which initiated a period of turmoil for the franchise.

Offseason of Uncertainty

The trade request marked a significant shift for Larkin, who has been a cornerstone of the Red Wings since being drafted in 2014. In June, reports indicated that Larkin had identified the Golden Knights, Panthers, and Wild as preferred destinations. His desire to be traded followed a decade-long period where the Red Wings have failed to qualify for the postseason.

This offseason also saw Steve Yzerman step down from his role as general manager in July, adding to the instability. Adding to the ongoing concerns, top defenseman Simon Edvinsson remained unsigned as the season commenced on Friday.

Larkin's Legacy and Future

Larkin, a Michigan native, has been a prominent figure for the Red Wings throughout his career. He was named team captain in the 2020-21 season, recognized for his leadership. However, the captaincy was revoked in September following his trade request.

"The Red Wings will begin the 2026-27 season without a captain being named," the team stated last month. "Any further discussions or decisions will be made once new hockey operations leadership is in place." Larkin has publicly acknowledged the decision, stating that he understands "why that decision was made."

Despite the recent turbulence, Larkin remains under contract, with five seasons remaining on an eight-year, $69.6 million deal signed in 2023. Over his 808 career games with Detroit, the 30-year-old center has amassed 276 goals and 367 assists, totaling 643 points, placing him 10th all-time in franchise history.
