Red Sox Reassign Coaches Chad Epperson and Pablo Cabrera Following Playoff Exit

The Boston Red Sox are making changes to their coaching staff, reassigning third base coach Chad Epperson and first base coach Pablo Cabrera to minor league roles for the 2027 season. Epperson is set to become the manager of Triple-A Worcester, while Cabrera will return to his former position as the franchise's minor league defensive coordinator.

Epperson's reassignment comes after a season where the Red Sox baserunners were frequently thrown out at home plate, including four instances in a six-game span in May. The team has not yet announced replacements for these positions, leaving at least two vacancies on manager Chad Tracy’s staff.

This move follows a significant shake-up in April 2026, when the Red Sox fired manager Alex Cora and four other coaches, including hitting coach Peter Fatse, bench coach Ramon Vazquez, third base coach Kyle Hudson, and assistant hitting coach Dillon Lawson. Jason Varitek was also reassigned.

The Red Sox experienced a dramatic turnaround in the 2026 season. After a poor start led to the dismissal of Cora and his staff, the team went on a remarkable run, winning 32 of 37 games and achieving a 15-game winning streak. This turnaround propelled them into the postseason, ultimately securing the full-time managerial position for Chad Tracy.

However, their season concluded with a disappointing performance in the American League Wild Card Series, where they were swept by the New York Yankees, being outscored 18-2 over the two games.
