Red Sox Lose Roman Anthony for Wild-Card Series Amidst Wrist Injury

The Boston Red Sox have lost outfielder Roman Anthony for their wild-card series against the New York Yankees after he sustained “additional damage” to muscles in his right wrist. Red Sox manager Chad Tracy confirmed the injury, which will sideline the player for the best-of-three series and potentially longer should the team advance.

The Red Sox have submitted paperwork to Major League Baseball to remove Anthony from the roster and replace him. In the interim, Jahmai Jones was slated to be in the lineup for an elimination game against the Yankees.

Anthony, who batted leadoff Tuesday, was lifted after only two at-bats due to the reinjury of the same hand that had previously sidelined him for nearly four months. He originally suffered a partially torn tendon in a finger-to-wrist joint early in the season. He aggravated the injury while facing pitcher Cam Schlittler.

Following the game, Anthony was sent back to Boston for re-imaging, which revealed further damage to his wrist. Anthony had been a significant prospect and a strong performer after his debut last season, but an injury-plagued sophomore campaign has limited his availability.

“He’s a really good player,” Tracy said of Anthony. “So, certainly not something we wanted to happen, and having him in there is important. But again, I can’t reiterate enough, we’ve dealt with things like this all year. The show goes on.”

The team lost Game 1 of the wild-card series to the Yankees with a score of 9-0.
