Red Baron Worker Receives Over $600,000 After Viral Prank Video

A Red Baron employee, identified as Walt Z, has expressed gratitude to the public after a viral video of a cruel prank led to over $600,000 in donations. The incident occurred in August when a streamer approached Walt Z while he was stocking shelves at a Michigan grocery store.

The prankster, recording the encounter, played the Apple Pay chime while Walt Z pulled out his phone to check the time, pretending to take money from him. Initially, Walt Z calmly asked the prankster to leave him alone. However, as the situation escalated, he explained that the act was not a joke to him, emphasizing his hard work to provide for his family and his desire to return home.

The clip, initially posted on a now-deleted page, resurfaced and quickly gained traction on social media, prompting an outpouring of support. A GoFundMe page, created by a viewer named Luke Oakenshield, has raised more than $585,000 for Walt Z as of Friday evening. A separate GiveSendGo fundraiser has added over $14,200.

In a statement posted on GoFundMe, Walt Z thanked his supporters: "I wanted to take a moment to personally thank everyone who has donated, shared this fundraiser, or left a kind message. The kindness and encouragement you’ve shown me and my family have meant more than I can put into words." He added that his family is doing well and expressed gratitude for the support, requesting privacy.

Walt Z also addressed interview requests, stating that while he is not typically one to seek the spotlight, he is considering sharing his story. He emphasized that any such sharing would be contingent on the interviewer treating him and his family with care and respect for their privacy.

During the prank, when the recording individual continued to provoke him, Walt Z expressed his frustration, stating, "It's not a joke to me... My life is hard enough as it is." He recounted that his children were in bed without him and that he was supposed to be home an hour earlier, still working to fulfill his duties, including rising at 5 a.m. for 10 more store visits.

He also noted the potential for him to be kicked out of the store due to the disturbance. The prankster's apology was met with skepticism from Walt Z, who perceived a "smug look" and suggested the prankster was profiting from the situation, contrasting it with his own struggles to pay his mortgage and support his four children.

The public reaction was largely sympathetic towards Walt Z, with many criticizing the prankster as a "wannabe influencer" and a "punk."

Vivek Ramaswamy, a candidate for Governor of Ohio, publicly supported Walt Z, along with his wife Apoorva. They donated $38,000 to the GoFundMe campaign. Ramaswamy shared a video expressing solidarity, stating, "You're brave and you speak for millions of Americans across this country." He also showed frozen Red Baron pizzas on his bus tour, dedicating one to Walt Z.

A spokesperson for Red Baron's parent company, CJ Schwan's, confirmed awareness of the video and stated that the company had connected with Walt Z after the incident to ensure his well-being. The company expressed pleasure that he is doing well and remains a "valued member of our team."
