Red Baron Vendor Angers Pranksters, Inspires Massive Online Fundraiser

A Michigan father, identified as Walt Z, who gained internet notoriety after confronting two Instagram pranksters who targeted him while he was working, has been overwhelmed by the public's response to a fundraising effort on his behalf. In just two days, the online fundraiser has garnered more than $400,000 in donations.

The incident began when two individuals approached Walt Z, a vendor for Red Baron, as he stocked freezer shelves in a grocery store. They pretended to steal money from him using a fake Apple Pay sound. In a video that subsequently went viral, Walt Z expressed his frustration, stating, “My life is hard enough as it is, okay? I don’t need this crap.” He explained the toll his demanding job takes, mentioning his children and early morning schedule.

When one of the pranksters dismissed his reaction as “just a joke,” Walt Z responded forcefully, highlighting his financial struggles and parental responsibilities: “I can’t even pay my goddamn mortgage! And I got four kids at home! So not funny!”

The pranksters posted the video to Instagram but later removed it and deactivated their account amid significant backlash from viewers who sided with Walt Z. Recognizing his situation, a verified GoFundMe campaign was established by an organizer named Luke Oakenshield. Oakenshield cited concerns that Walt Z might lose his job due to the incident.

“Walt Z out of Michigan sends a heartfelt thankyou, and is absolutely blown away by how much people have cared over this,” Oakenshield wrote on Wednesday. The organizer stated that Walt Z is requesting privacy and that the funds will be transferred directly to him.

A spokesperson for Red Baron’s parent company confirmed awareness of the video and stated that the company had been in contact with Walt Z, offering their full support. The spokesperson added that Walt Z is doing well and remains a valued employee.
