Vet Plus Inc., selling products under the Fi brand, has initiated a recall for two popular dog supplements due to potential salmonella contamination. The issue stems from a contaminated ingredient supplied to the company's manufacturer, leading to a pause in production as of September 3. The recalled products, Fi Calming supplement for Dogs (180 g, Lot 26118, UPC 8 50064 80011 1) and Fi 8-in-1 Formula supplement for Dogs (180 g, Lot 26159, UPC 8 50055 11168 4), were sold directly to consumers through online retailers including Amazon and Chewy.com.
Owners who purchased the affected supplements are advised to stop using them immediately. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recommends sealing the containers and disposing of the products in the trash. Fi is also proactively notifying customers out of an abundance of caution and has provided a support team for any questions via phone or email at [email protected].
The Fi supplements are intended to promote relaxation, calmness, and enhance brain function in dogs.
Owners whose pets have consumed the recalled product and are exhibiting symptoms of salmonella infection, such as lethargy, diarrhea (possibly bloody), fever, vomiting, decreased appetite, or abdominal pain, should consult a veterinarian. Some pets may show no symptoms but can still shed salmonella and transmit it to other animals and humans.
Salmonella infection in humans can lead to serious health complications. The bacteria can destroy intestinal cells, causing stomach cramps and difficulty absorbing water. In rare but severe cases, salmonella can cause infections in the brain, bones, joints, heart lining, or urinary system, potentially leading to meningitis, osteomyelitis, endocarditis, or sepsis. These severe outcomes pose the greatest risk to vulnerable populations, including young children, the elderly, and individuals with weakened immune systems, who may require intensive medical treatment.
This recall follows a series of similar incidents involving pet food and supplements contaminated with salmonella. In May, Albright's Raw Pet Food recalled its chicken recipe for dogs due to salmonella concerns.
