Reality TV Star Warns of Social Media Dangers After Home Burglary

Paul Gorton, a participant on the BBC reality show 'The Traitors,' has spoken out about a distressing home burglary that occurred shortly after he and his partner, Kate Waldron, posted photos from their holiday in Mallorca. The thieves reportedly stole thousands of pounds worth of items and irreplaceable sentimental gifts.

According to Gorton, police evidence suggests the break-in happened approximately 20 minutes after they shared their real-time holiday updates on Instagram. "We were sitting by the pool having a drink and I posted it on my Instagram, not realizing that minutes later someone would jump over my fence and smash the back door," Gorton told the Daily Mail. "They were robbing us as simultaneously me and Kate are actually having a nice evening."

Upon returning home after a delayed flight, the couple discovered their office had been ransacked. Among the stolen items was Gorton's Specialized bicycle, valued at around £5,000. While his partner Kate's belongings were largely untouched, Gorton noted that his wardrobe space had been thoroughly searched. "They were obviously looking for something and then they've left with my bike," he said.

The thieves also took Kate's jewelry box, which contained costume jewelry worth a few hundred pounds but also included a sentimental ring belonging to her grandmother. "Completely worthless but worth everything to Kate, and it's now gone," Gorton stated.

He expressed concern about the robbers' apparent focus, noting that valuable electronics such as computers, phones, and televisions were left behind. "The police were saying a lot of robbers have tunnel vision, so they come for particular items," he explained. "Everything I post now, I'm just more conscious of how I am posting it and how vulnerable my house is."

Ironically, Gorton had considered getting contents insurance the night before their holiday but was distracted. He is now partnering with Compare The Market, which commissioned 'The Online Safety Experiment,' to highlight the risks associated with sharing real-time location information on social media while away from home. The experiment surveyed 3,000 UK adults and involved a private investigator identifying home addresses from publicly available information.

"We've had a really stern warning," Gorton remarked. "It's amazing that Compare the Market can use my story to help people, so hopefully what happened to me doesn't happen to them."
