Reality TV Home Sales Spark Outrage Amid Cost of Living Crisis

The finale of the reality television show 'The Block' saw all five homes sell for record prices, generating substantial profits for contestants and drawing criticism from viewers struggling with a cost of living crisis. Courtney and Sev's House 4 sold for $4.72 million, netting them a profit of $1.27 million, making them the highest earners of the season.

Despite the financial success for the participants, many social media users expressed dismay at the high property values. Comments on platforms like X highlighted the disparity between the show's outcomes and the economic realities faced by many Australians. "What cost of living crisis? Lambos, Ferraris, profits of over 1.2 million," one user wrote. Another questioned the high prices, asking, "Who would pay over $4 million to live in that s**thole Victoria?"

Further discontent was voiced by those pointing out the perceived disconnect between the show's market and everyday financial struggles. "I get property is worth as much as anyone is prepared to pay..... but paying any more than $3.5 million for these houses is just f**king stupid considering what's available right now..." one comment read. Another viewer noted the irony of host Scott Cam having previously spoken about high housing costs pricing his own sons out of the market.

Adam and Jolene's house sold for $3.905 million, yielding a $455,000 profit. Lisa and Rosco's property fetched $4 million, with a $550,000 profit. Rick and Tayla's home sold for $4.355 million, earning them $905,000. Chantel and Wyatt's property sold for $3.817 million, resulting in a $367,000 profit.

Courtney and Sev's win also included a $500,000 cash prize from host Scotty Cam, in addition to their auction profit and a $100,000 winner's prize, bringing their total earnings to $1.87 million. The sales concluded the 2026 season of the show, with all contestants reportedly leaving with significant financial gains.
