The Reading and Leeds Festival has drawn criticism for replacing the long-standing BBC Introducing Stage with a new platform dubbed the 'Nepo Baby Stage' by some attendees. The BBC Introducing Stage, a fixture for nearly two decades, provided a vital space for unsigned artists to gain exposure. Its removal this year and replacement by the Canopy Stage has sparked outrage among music fans and artists who relied on the platform.
This year's Canopy Stage featured performances from children of well-known celebrities, including Violet Grohl (daughter of Dave Grohl), Cruz Beckham (son of David and Victoria Beckham), Moses Martin (son of Chris Martin and Gwyneth Paltrow), and Gene Gallagher (son of Liam Gallagher and Nicole Appleton). The group December 10, who gained fame on a Netflix series, also performed.
Festival Republic, the organizers of Reading and Leeds, stated that the change allowed for a broader range of emerging talent to be showcased. "Previously, only artists who had been selected by the BBC were qualified to play the Introducing Stage," a spokesperson said. "Now, we are able to open up this important platform to a much wider pool of emerging talent and book any new music artist for the stage."
However, musicians who benefited from the BBC Introducing Stage have expressed disappointment. Juliette Jackson of the Mercury-nominated band The Big Moon described the axing of the stage as a "loss," recalling its significance for new bands lacking financial resources. "It's huge when you're starting out – it gives you an opportunity and puts you on a platform," she told The Guardian.
Jason Carter, the founder of BBC Introducing in 2007, also expressed sadness over the stage's removal but acknowledged the evolving music industry landscape. "I can see both sides," he noted, suggesting that festivals may be adapting to new ways of discovering music.
The BBC Introducing scheme has been instrumental in launching the careers of major artists such as Ed Sheeran, The 1975, and Sam Fender. Sheeran, for example, used BBC Introducing to gain early airplay and performance opportunities, eventually headlining the BBC Music Introducing stage at Glastonbury before headlining the main festival.
In contrast, the artists featured on the Canopy Stage have often benefited from established industry connections from birth. Cruz Beckham released his debut EP "Wear & Tear" and performed with his band The Breakers, supported by his famous parents. Moses Martin fronts the indie-pop/rock band People I've Met, who were signed by Interscope Records and released their debut EP "Bunny." Gene Gallagher, as the lead singer and guitarist for the grunge/indie rock band Villanelle, performed at the festival after supporting his father's tour. Violet Grohl released her debut album "Be Sweet To Me" in June and has been supported by her father, who has stated he had no direct involvement in her music career or record deal.
