Readers Condemn NYC Teacher for Praising Hamas Leader

New York Post readers have voiced strong disapproval and concern following reports that a New York City public school teacher, Damien Neva, allegedly praised a leader of Hamas in a Signal group chat. The letters, published on October 7, 2026, question the vetting process for educators and criticize the perceived lack of action against extremism in schools.

One reader, Mel Young of West Dover, Vermont, directly addressed the Department of Education and the school's principal, questioning their assessment of Neva's suitability to teach children. Young raised concerns about whether Neva could conduct a fair and objective discussion on the Gaza conflict, given his alleged praise for Yahya al-Sinwar, described as a cruel terrorist.

Sara Gershon of Syosset called on Education Secretary Linda McMahon to address what she termed "extremism being taught in schools across the United States," suggesting the secretary was "AWOL" if her role was to combat such issues. Gershon also urged voters to hold accountable the politicians who permit such situations to continue.

Thomas De Julio of Delray Beach, Florida, contrasted traditional educational aims with what he described as the current curriculum's focus on "rioting, resistance and racism" due to teachers like Neva.

Kevin Judge of Naples, Florida, expressed disbelief that a teacher allegedly praising a Hamas figure could be part of the New York City educational system. Judge argued that taxpayers should not fund educators who espouse hateful rhetoric, calling for Neva to be dismissed.

Donathan Salkaln of Manhattan stated that individuals who sympathize with Hamas should not be in positions of piloting planes or teaching children, citing the potential for deadly consequences.

The letters come in response to a report detailing Neva's alleged comments. The Post article referenced an earlier report from October 5, 2026, titled "Devil in the classroom," concerning Neva's alleged praise for a Hamas leader and the potential implications for students. Another report from the same date, "Jewish kids fleeing public schools amid growing antisemitism, including Hamas-loving teacher," was also cited.
