Rays Take Commanding 3-2 Series Lead Over Guardians

Drew Rasmussen delivered a dominant performance, pitching seven innings and allowing just one run to lead the Tampa Bay Rays to a 3-1 victory over the Cleveland Guardians in Game 5 of the American League Championship Series. The win gives the Rays a 3-2 series lead and moves them one step closer to their third AL pennant.

The Rays will have the opportunity to clinch the series on Monday at Tropicana Field. Historically, teams that win Game 5 on the road to take a 3-2 lead have gone on to win the series in four out of five instances since the ALCS expanded to a seven-game format in 1985.

Tampa Bay established an early lead, scoring single runs in the first three innings. Yandy Díaz led off the first with a double and scored on a bases-loaded walk. Jonathan Aranda's single in the second drove in Ben Williamson, extending the lead to 2-0. Liam Hicks contributed an RBI single in the third to make it 3-0.

Rasmussen, who had surrendered two runs in six innings in Game 1, stifled the Guardians' offense. After allowing a first-inning single, he retired nine consecutive batters and permitted only one other baserunner through the sixth. He finished the game with four hits allowed, one walk, and six strikeouts. This postseason, Rasmussen is 2-0 with a 1.29 ERA across three starts, with 23 strikeouts and three walks.

Cam Booser and Tyler Wells handled the eighth inning, with Wells striking out José Ramírez to end the threat. Bryan Baker secured the save in the ninth, extending his season-long save streak to 35 and his postseason save streak to five.

The Guardians' offense struggled, managing only five hits. Steven Kwan recorded two hits and made two notable defensive plays: throwing out Taylor Walls at home in the fourth inning and making a leaping catch at the center-field wall in the eighth.

Cleveland's starting pitcher, Parker Messick, had his shortest outing of the season, failing to complete three innings. He allowed two runs and five hits, along with three walks, in two innings of work.

The Rays' ability to get on base early in the game proved crucial. Their leadoff hitter reached base in the first four innings, leading to runs in the first three. Díaz led the Rays' offense with three hits, while Aranda and Hicks each had two hits and an RBI.
