Rays Sweep Yankees in ALDS After Controversial Interference Call

The Tampa Bay Rays completed a sweep of the New York Yankees in their American League Division Series matchup, winning Game 3 by a score of 4-3. The series conclusion was marked by a pivotal and controversial spectator interference call.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, with the Yankees trailing 4-3, Anthony Volpe appeared to hit a two-run home run to left field that would have tied the game. However, the play was reviewed, and an umpire determined that a fan in the first row reached over the wall and interfered with the ball before it cleared the fence. Consequently, the call was overturned, and Volpe was awarded an RBI double, bringing the Yankees within one run.

The Yankees had taken an early lead with solo home runs from Ryan Vilade in the fourth inning and Victor Mesa Jr. in the sixth, which had cut the Rays' lead to 4-2. Max Fried, the Yankees' starting pitcher, allowed four runs on seven hits, including the two home runs.

The Rays' bullpen secured the victory, with closer Bryan Baker striking out Trent Grisham to end the game and clinch the series sweep. This marks another early postseason exit for the Yankees against an AL East opponent.

The Rays now await the winner of the ALDS series between the Chicago White Sox and the Cleveland Guardians. The White Sox currently lead that series two games to one.
