Rays Shut Out Yankees 1-0 in ALDS Game 1
Drew Rasmussen's dominant pitching performance limited the Yankees to a single hit through eight innings in the series opener.
Drew Rasmussen flirted with a no-hitter for 7 2/3 innings as the Tampa Bay Rays defeated the New York Yankees 1-0 in Game 1 of the American League Division Series on Saturday. The Rays' victory was secured by a single run in the third inning and a stellar pitching performance.
Jonathan Aranda provided the game's only offense with a solo home run off Yankees pitcher Gerrit Cole in the bottom of the third. That proved to be enough for Tampa Bay, as Rasmussen stifled the Yankees' offense throughout the game.
Rasmussen struck out 10 batters and allowed just one hit and two walks before exiting the game. Closer Bryan Baker secured the final outs in the ninth inning.
The Yankees' lone hit came in the top of the eighth inning when Austin Wells hit a two-out double. However, Wells' attempt to stretch the hit into a triple resulted in him being thrown out at third base, ending the Yankees' best threat of the game.
Gerrit Cole pitched five innings for the Yankees, surrendering one run on five hits while striking out five. The Yankees' bullpen, consisting of Ryan Weathers, Paul Blackburn, and Brent Headrick, combined for three hitless innings in relief.
Game 2 of the ALDS is scheduled for Monday at 8 p.m. in Tampa Bay.
