Rays Force World Series Game 5 With Extra-Innings Victory

The Tampa Bay Rays avoided elimination in Game 4 of the World Series, securing a dramatic extra-innings victory over the Milwaukee Brewers. Ben Williamson's clutch hit in the bottom of the 12th inning drove in the winning run, extending the series and giving the Rays a kernel of hope.

Prior to their Game 4 win, the Rays faced an daunting 3-0 deficit, a situation from which only one team in Major League Baseball history has come back to win a series: the 2004 Boston Red Sox, who achieved the feat in the American League Championship Series against the New York Yankees before going on to win the World Series.

The Rays' victory also places them in rare company as the fourth team in World Series history to avoid elimination with an extra-inning comeback. They join the 1912 Red Sox, the 1986 New York Mets, and the 2011 St. Louis Cardinals, all of whom went on to win the World Series in those respective seasons. However, none of those teams faced a 3-0 deficit.

"We've got a lot of fight in us. We’re never going to shy away," Rays outfielder Chandler Simpson said after the game. "We were going to keep fighting until the end — the last inning, the last out, the last play, the last pitch."

The decisive moment came when the Rays trailed 3-2 heading into the bottom of the 12th. An error by the Brewers allowed the Rays to load the bases, setting the stage for Williamson's game-winning single.

"It just shows the resiliency of this group," Williamson stated. "We continue to fight, and that’s been the motto this series and this full season, is just fight."

Despite the momentum swing, the Rays face a significant challenge in Game 5. They are set to face two-time All-Star and National League Cy Young Award favorite Jacob Misiorowski, who allowed one run on four hits in five innings during the Brewers' Game 1 victory. Misiorowski can either secure the championship for Milwaukee or send the series back to Tampa Bay for a potential historic comeback.
