Rays Even ALCS Against Guardians With Game 4 Victory

The Tampa Bay Rays evened the American League Championship Series against the Cleveland Guardians at two games apiece with a 7-3 victory in Game 4 on Saturday night. The Rays' offense, which had struggled in the first three games, produced 11 hits and seven runs, led by Jonathan Aranda and Yandy Diaz.

Jonathan Aranda's clutch single in the seventh inning drove in two runs after a misplay by right fielder Chase DeLauter, breaking a tie and igniting a three-run rally. Aranda finished with three hits and two RBIs, a significant turnaround after going 0-for-10 in the series' first three games. Yandy Diaz contributed a two-run homer in the ninth and added another RBI single, finishing with two hits and two RBIs.

Nick Martinez earned his first postseason win, pitching 5 1/3 innings and allowing just one run and two hits. His performance helped the Rays overcome an early deficit after Cleveland's Travis Bazzana hit an RBI single in the first inning.

Key Offensive Contributions

The top four hitters in the Rays' lineup—Díaz, Aranda, Chandler Simpson, and Junior Caminero—accounted for six hits and six RBIs, a stark contrast to their combined 7-for-41 performance with three RBIs through the first three games. Caminero also contributed a crucial double in the sixth inning that put the Rays ahead 2-1.

"A lot of really good at-bats. A lot of hard hits," Rays manager Kevin Cash said. "But overall, just happy that Junior squared some balls up, Aranda came through in a big way for us and then Yandy there at the end with a two-run, add-on homer."

Defensive Miscues and Rally

The decisive seventh inning began with Richie Palacios and Taylor Walls reaching base. After a double steal put them in scoring position, Aranda lined a single past a diving Bazzana. Palacios scored on the play, and Walls came around from second on DeLauter's subsequent error. Simpson then added an RBI sacrifice fly to cap the three-run frame.

Guardians manager Stephen Vogt acknowledged the defensive lapses. "It looked like it may have snaked on him or just skipped by him, took his eye off of it," Vogt said. "A couple unfortunate plays for us tonight that we usually complete and just weren’t able to do it."

Cleveland attempted to rally in the seventh, with Bazzana hitting a home run and Brayan Rocchio adding an RBI single, but the Rays extended their lead with Diaz's ninth-inning blast.

Series Outlook

Game 5 is scheduled for Sunday in Cleveland. The series will then shift to St. Petersburg, Florida, for Game 6 on Monday. Friday's Game 4 was postponed due to rain, eliminating an off day for travel between Cleveland and St. Petersburg.

Cleveland's rookie pitcher Parker Messick (0-2, 3.09 ERA) is expected to start Game 5. The Rays will counter with Drew Rasmussen (1-0, 1.29 ERA), who pitched well in Game 1 but received a no-decision.

Yandy Diaz belts a two-run homer in the ninth inning of the Rays' Game 4 road win over the Guardians.
