Rays Even ALCS Against Guardians With Game 2 Victory

The American League Championship Series is tied at 1-1 after the Tampa Bay Rays defeated the Cleveland Guardians in Game 2. The series features two of baseball's lower-spending franchises, with the Rays often relying on their farm system and player development, and the Guardians operating with the lowest payroll in Major League Baseball.

Game 2 saw the Rays' midseason acquisition, pitcher Freddy Peralta, deliver a strong performance. Peralta, who struggled with the New York Mets, threw six shutout innings, striking out six batters and allowing only four hits. His fastball velocity was notably higher than his season average, and his ERA with the Rays has dropped to 0.81 over his last eight starts. The Rays' defense, including a play by third baseman Junior Caminero, contributed to Peralta's success.

Tampa Bay's offense provided support in the fourth inning against Guardians starter Parker Messick. An infield single by Victor Mesa Jr., followed by a rally aided by a fielding error from Cleveland third baseman José Ramírez, allowed Mesa to score. Liam Hicks then drove in two more runs with a single, giving the Rays a 3-0 lead.

The Guardians attempted a comeback in the seventh inning. Patrick Bailey drew a walk, and Steven Kwan followed with a single. After José Ramírez lined out, Chase DeLauter hit a double to right field, scoring a run and bringing Cleveland within three. With the tying run on base, Jo Adell represented a significant threat, but Rays reliever Ian Seymour struck him out to end the inning.

Tampa Bay's dominant closer, Bryan Baker, closed out the game in the ninth, retiring the Guardians in order on just seven pitches. Baker has recorded four saves in the postseason with a 1.44 regular-season ERA.

The ALCS now shifts to Cleveland for Game 3, where the Guardians' Gavin Williams is expected to face Rays pitcher Griffin Jax. The Guardians will aim to take a lead in the series in front of their home crowd at Progressive Field.
