Olympic breakdancer Rachael Gunn, known as Raygun, made an appearance on "The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon," where she engaged in a peculiar segment involving the Australian staple, Vegemite, and prompted Fallon to taste it directly from the jar.
During the interview, Raygun, who recently released her Netflix documentary "Untold Raygun: Breaking Badly," discussed the intense pressures and "imposter syndrome" she experienced leading up to and during the Paris 2024 Olympics. She recounted feeling like a "fish out of water" and questioning her place on the Olympic stage, despite the excitement and privilege of representing her country.
Towards the end of the segment, Raygun presented Fallon with two jars of Vegemite. Fallon, who had previously tried the spread with Hugh Jackman, expressed apprehension. Raygun encouraged him to try it directly from the jar, contrasting with the traditional method of spreading it on toast. Fallon eventually complied, visibly reacting to the intense, salty flavor, likening it to "eating a liquefied bouillon cube."
The Vegemite tasting followed Raygun's candid discussion about the public scrutiny and online conspiracy theories she faced after the Olympics. She addressed accusations that she did not take the Games seriously and that her qualification was influenced by her husband, Sammie Free. Raygun refuted these claims, emphasizing the rigorous preparation and emotional toll the experience took on her.
"I was stressed out of my mind trying to train, build my strength, build myself up to perform on that stage," Raygun stated, explaining her commitment to representing herself and Australia through her dance. She also touched upon the misinformation surrounding her husband's role, clarifying that he was not a judge or part of any selection committee.
In addition to her Netflix documentary, Raygun has launched a clothing line called "Raygun Threads," featuring merchandise inspired by her Olympic journey, including her signature "Kangaroo dance move."
