Ravens Utilize Trick Play in Close Loss to Browns
Baltimore Ravens offensive coordinator Declan Doyle devised a creative play that resulted in a significant gain but couldn't secure a victory.
The Baltimore Ravens employed an unconventional trick play during their recent 13-10 loss to the Cleveland Browns.
In the first quarter, offensive coordinator Declan Doyle positioned tight end Josh Cuevas at the left guard spot. To make Cuevas an eligible receiver, the Ravens ensured he was not lined up on the line of scrimmage. This tactic caught the Browns off guard, allowing Cuevas to break free for a 29-yard completion to quarterback Tyler Huntley.
This play marked a notable moment for Cuevas, who had only recorded three catches throughout the season prior to this game. Against the Browns, he finished with four receptions for 44 yards and a touchdown. He had previously scored the game's opening points in the first quarter after being left uncovered in the end zone.
Despite the offensive ingenuity, the Ravens were unable to maintain their lead. The Browns staged a comeback, ultimately winning the game in Cleveland. Browns coach Todd Monken acknowledged his team's resilience, stating, "Our guys are a scrappy group and they played their rear ends off for 60 minutes. And that will always give you a chance to win."
However, the mood within the Ravens' locker room was somber. Safety Kyle Hamilton expressed disappointment, reflecting, "I think that’s one we definitely should have won. In this league, you let a team in the game, especially at home, this division you let a team stay around they’re going to find momentum. Defense, we have to go out there and get some stops to ice the game at the end, but it’s about playing complementary football."
Deshaun Watson led the Browns' final drive, which included a 33-yard pass to Jerry Jeudy, setting up Andre Szmyt's game-winning 37-yard field goal.
