Rashid Johnson Named to TIME100 Art List for Diverse Artistic Practice
The artist's career-defining exhibition at the Guggenheim highlights his multi-medium approach to exploring 21st-century American existence.
Rashid Johnson has been recognized on the TIME100 Art List for 2026, acknowledging his extensive artistic practice that transcends traditional medium specificity. Johnson's body of work encompasses paintings, sculptures, mixed-media assemblages, mosaics, photographs, performance, films, and magazine covers. This broad engagement with various artistic avenues is seen as a way to explore the complexities of existence in contemporary America, particularly in the context of Black thought.
"I'm not invested in medium specificity," Johnson told TIME in 2025. He expressed confidence in the audience's ability to follow his diverse explorations, stating, "I think whoever convinced the viewer they should feel insecure… is at fault." Johnson's career has reached a significant milestone with a recent exhibition at New York City's Guggenheim Museum. Following its New York run, the exhibition traveled to Fort Worth, Texas, and is scheduled to move to his hometown of Chicago in November.
Beyond his individual success, Johnson has actively used his platform to uplift and promote the work of Black artists who preceded him, including McArthur Binion and Robert Colescott. He has also organized joint exhibitions and residencies with his contemporaries and peers.
