Rare First Edition of 'Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone' Sells for Nearly $400,000
A hardcover first printing from 1997, one of only 500 copies made for libraries, fetched a high price at auction.
A rare first edition of J.K. Rowling's "Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone," one of only 500 known copies, has sold at auction for close to $400,000.
The book is a hardcover first printing from 1997 and includes several identifying misprints characteristic of early editions. These include a Wendy Cooling review on the front board, the phrase "1 wand" listed twice on page 53, the copyright page listing the author as "Joanne Rowling," and misprints of "Philosopher's" and "Wizardry and Witchcraft" on the rear board.
All 5,650 copies of the first edition, both hardback and paperback, were published on the same date. However, the hardcover binding is notably scarcer, with only 500 copies produced for distribution to public libraries, according to Heritage Auctions.
Auctioneer Samantha Sisler described the condition as remarkable for a library copy, noting light rubbing at the spine ends and corners, minor scratches on the rear board, and slightly browned text.
The book was sold on October 14 at Heritage Auctions' headquarters in Texas following a four-minute bidding war. The final hammer price was $320,000, totaling $400,000 with the buyer's premium.
The auction also saw other Harry Potter-related items sold, including a first American edition and first printing of "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone" signed by Rowling, which sold for $18,750. Additionally, signed first American editions of "Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets" and "Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban" each sold for $4,000, and a first edition of "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire" signed by Rowling brought $3,000.
