Rangers' Top Prospect Albert Smits Makes Opening Night Roster

Albert Smits, the New York Rangers' 18-year-old first-round draft pick, has earned a spot on the team's initial 23-man roster, according to reports.
Smits' performance during training camp drew consistent praise from the coaching staff, culminating in his inclusion for the team's opening night game against the Boston Bruins. He is expected to skate on a line with Braden Schneider, who expressed confidence in the young forward.
"A lot of his game has impressed us," head coach Mike Sullivan said following a preseason game. "Just his quiet confidence. He defends really well with his stick. His reach is strong. He doesn’t get out-muscled, and he’s not afraid to make a play. He plays the game out there like he belongs."
Smits was the Rangers' No. 5 overall selection in the draft and his quick integration into the NHL roster signals the team's high expectations for his development. His inclusion was part of several roster decisions finalized over the weekend, including forwards Matt Rempe and Jaroslav Chmelar making the team, defensemen Matthew Robertson and Scott Morrow securing spots, and Joonas Korpisalo being named the backup goaltender.
The Rangers' regular season begins Tuesday night at the Bruins.
