Rangers Shut Out by Bruins in Season Opener
Boston breaks scoreless tie late in third period to defeat New York 3-0 in the first of 84 games.
The New York Rangers began their supersized season with a 3-0 shutout loss to the Boston Bruins on Opening Night. This marks the second consecutive year the Rangers have been held scoreless on opening night.
Despite a scoreless tie persisting until late in the third period at TD Garden, the Bruins secured their victory with two quick goals, followed by an empty-netter. The game was one of five matchups across the NHL that appeared to reflect the effects of a shortened preseason.
The Rangers generated nearly as many shots as the Bruins but struggled defensively in the first two periods, allowing multiple odd-man rushes. Goaltender Igor Shesterkin made numerous saves to prevent the Bruins from scoring earlier.
Shesterkin finished the game with 20 saves. The Rangers showed improved defensive play and an offensive push in the third period, including an initial five-shot surge. However, Fraser Minten's goal from the high slot late in the period opened the scoring for Boston, leading to the eventual 3-0 final.
