Rangers Open Post-Shesterkin Era with Resilient Victory Over Canucks

The New York Rangers have begun their post-Igor Shesterkin era with a gritty and resilient 6-2 victory over the Vancouver Canucks, showcasing a mental toughness that contrasted sharply with the team's struggles in previous seasons. The win came just days after the devastating news that their star goaltender, Shesterkin, would miss the remainder of the 2026-27 season due to a knee injury.

Last season, the Rangers were often criticized for their inability to recover from setbacks, crumbling under pressure when games became difficult, whether due to game-tying goals, questionable officiating, or their own turnovers. However, this season's team has displayed a markedly different approach.

"This is a situation I feel like not a lot needs to be said," captain J.T. Miller stated. "Everybody in here knows what needs to be done. Everybody’s got to pull a little more weight around here. ... It’s devastating to lose a guy like him, outside of how elite he is as a goalie…There’s a lot to be pulled from every guy in here right now to make up for what we’re losing."

The Rangers demonstrated this resilience even in the Sunday night game against Vancouver. After giving up an equalizing shorthanded goal late in the second period, the team did not falter. Instead, they responded with Tye Kartye scoring his second goal of the game to regain the lead, 3-2. This ability to bounce back after a momentum-swinging moment echoed their performance in a recent game against the Islanders, where they also overcame a deficit.

Rookie goaltender Dylan Garand, now slated to be the Rangers' starter, made 19 saves on 21 shots. He has limited opposing teams to two goals or fewer in each of his six NHL appearances this season. The Rangers solidified their lead in the third period, scoring three more goals while limiting the Canucks to just four shots on goal.

Earlier in the game, Alexis Lafreniere set up J.T. Miller for the opening goal just 27 seconds into the first period. Despite a strong first period from the Rangers, Vancouver's Jake DeBrusk tied the game with a quick shot. However, the Rangers' renewed mental strength was evident as they pushed back against the Canucks' attempts to gain momentum.
