Rangers Maintain Undefeated Home Streak with 4-1 Victory Over Lightning
Alexis Lafrenière scores twice as the Rangers extend their perfect record at Madison Square Garden.
The New York Rangers continued their strong home performance with a 4-1 win against the Tampa Bay Lightning on Tuesday night, maintaining their undefeated record at Madison Square Garden through five home games. This victory marks their sixth win in the last seven contests and their second win over the Lightning this season.
The Rangers' current 5-0 home record to start the season ranks third in club history for the longest home winning streak to open a season.
Alexis Lafrenière led the offensive effort with his second multi-goal game in four contests, extending his point streak to five games, the longest of his NHL career. He currently leads the league with seven goals through the first eight games of the season.
His first goal came early in the first period, assisted by Tye Kartye, who pressured a Lightning defenseman to create a turnover. Lafrenière then scored on a breakaway later in the first period after receiving a pass from Kartye.
Despite a first-period penalty by defenseman Alberts Smits leading to the Lightning's lone goal, scored by Zemgus Girgensons, the Rangers extended their lead in the second period. Will Cuylle deflected a shot from Sean Durzi to give the Rangers a 3-1 advantage.
In another notable moment, Matt Rempe engaged in a fight with Jeffrey Viel early in the game, energizing the home crowd. The Rangers' defense and goaltending, with rookie goalie Dylan Garand in net, held the Lightning to only one goal.
The Rangers' performance at home contrasts with their earlier season, where they lost four consecutive games after their season opener. Following that stretch, the team won four straight games, outscoring opponents 15-7, before returning to Madison Square Garden.
