Rangers' Early Success Fuels Confidence Under Coach Sullivan
The Rangers have started the season with an NHL-best four-game winning streak, a stark contrast to last year's struggles, with coach Mike Sullivan highlighting the impact of sustained success on team morale and performance.
The New York Rangers are riding an NHL-best four-game winning streak as they prepare to face the Capitals in Washington, D.C. This early success stands in contrast to the team's performance at the same point last season, when they faced offensive droughts and frustrating losses.
Head coach Mike Sullivan noted the significant difference early wins have made. "When you can stack wins on top of one another, it breeds confidence," Sullivan said. "Confidence is required to have success. I think the group has done a great job in just buying into the team game. Everybody’s accepting of the roles we’ve cast them in. There’s a level of enthusiasm around the group that, for me, is a whole lot of fun to be a part of."
Sullivan feels the positive shift within the locker room and on the ice. "We can feel it. We can feel it in the locker room. We can feel it inside of our confines. When we go out, we’re playing the game, it’s tangible. You can hear it on the bench," he stated. He pointed to the team's ability to play with leads in the third period and maintain an aggressive, yet responsible, approach as indicators of their current mindset. "Not playing not to lose. We’re playing to win."
The coach added, "It’s fun to watch these guys play and perform that way. I think there are great lessons in that. We’re going to try to continue to encourage them in some of the things we’re doing well and why we’re having success. There are areas where we know we can grow and improve and get better, and we’re working with those as well. This is the journey, every year, when you go to start training camp and it’s a clean slate. A new season. It’s a whole new journey. It’s been a whole lot of fun to coach these guys to this point."
Early season statistics highlight the Rangers' strong start. They have held the lead or been tied for the majority of game time, accumulating 296 minutes and 14 seconds in such situations out of 300 minutes played. The team's only outlier game was a season-opening shutout loss in Boston.
Goaltender Igor Shesterkin has been a key factor in the Rangers' success, allowing two or fewer goals in all four games he has played. His performance ranks him among the top NHL goaltenders since the 2019-20 season for games allowing two or fewer goals and games allowing one or fewer goals.
The Rangers currently boast the youngest roster in the NHL, with an average age of 26.47, following the recall of 20-year-old Cole Beaudoin from Hartford.
