The vehicle involved in the collision that killed Nobu Malibu chef Ryo Uchimiya was leased by the composer known for his work on films like 'Shrek' and 'Gladiator II'.
A 2026 Land Rover involved in a fatal collision that killed Nobu Malibu chef Ryo Uchimiya was leased by Hollywood composer Harry Gregson-Williams, according to a report citing DMV records.
The vehicle allegedly sped into a parked car occupied by Uchimiya early Saturday morning on Pacific Coast Highway. Gregson-Williams, 64, is known for composing scores for films such as 'Shrek,' 'The Chronicles of Narnia,' 'The Martian,' and 'Gladiator II.'
Details regarding the 16-year-old driver's connection to Gregson-Williams or how the teenager came to be driving the luxury SUV remain unclear. Gregson-Williams stated, "This family is grieving just as the other family," when contacted about the incident.
The crash occurred around 6:50 a.m. Surveillance footage reportedly captured the SUV colliding with the back of Uchimiya's parked sedan. The impact propelled Uchimiya's car into two other vehicles. Investigators with the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department believe the teenage driver was speeding at the time of the collision. The driver, a minor, has not been publicly identified, and no charges have been announced as the investigation continues.
Uchimiya, 51, had worked as a sushi chef at Nobu Malibu for approximately 25 years. He was reportedly in the back seat of his car, preparing for a catering gig, when the collision occurred. He sustained multiple blunt-force injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. His death was ruled an accident by the Los Angeles County medical examiner.
Witnesses described the teenage driver as appearing stunned and confused after the crash. One witness mentioned hearing that the driver might not have had a license. Authorities have stated there is no indication the driver was under the influence.
Colleagues described Uchimiya as a kind, talented chef and a devoted father of two. He is survived by his wife and two sons. Nobu Malibu remained closed on Saturday following the accident, with staff mourning their longtime colleague.
The stretch of Pacific Coast Highway where the crash took place is known for its high number of accidents, averaging around four crash-related fatalities annually over the past decade.
