Randy Pedersen, Bowling Legend and Broadcasting Icon, Dies at 64
Tributes pour in for the 13-time PBA champion and Hall of Famer, whose career spanned playing, broadcasting, and analysis.
Randy Pedersen, a 13-time PBA Tour champion and a prominent figure in bowling broadcasting, has died at the age of 64. His passing marks a significant loss for the sport, which is still reeling from the recent death of another top player.
Pedersen established himself as one of the world's elite bowlers during a decade-long stretch from 1986 to 1995. His career highlights include winning the PBA National Championship in 1986, his sole major title. He became the PBA's 24th millionaire by winning the 2002 Pepsi Open, his final PBA title.
Following his playing career, Pedersen transitioned to broadcasting, becoming a familiar voice for bowling fans. He joined ESPN in 2001, staying with the network until its PBA contract concluded in 2018. He then moved to Fox Sports with the PBA in 2019 and also served as an analyst for CBS Sports Network.
Pedersen was known for his engaging personality, sense of humor, and catchphrases, which he used to connect with viewers and explain the nuances of the game. "I want to convey to the viewing public that they are watching the best bowlers in the world," Pedersen once stated. "It's my job to explain what makes them that good, as well as provide other information that 'Johnny 150 average' doesn't already know. One thing I learned is if you can bring enthusiasm to the table, sometimes it doesn't really matter what is coming out of your mouth. The viewing audience senses the enthusiasm."
His contributions to the sport were recognized with inductions into prestigious halls of fame. He was elected to the PBA Hall of Fame in October 2010 and the United States Bowling Congress (USBC) Hall of Fame in November 2024.
Pedersen's death follows a recent tragedy in the sport. Eight-time PBA Tour winner Jakob Butturff died on July 31 at the age of 32. Tributes from fellow bowlers and organizations highlighted Pedersen's impact and the void his absence will leave.

Bowling writer Lucas Wiseman wrote on X: "RIP in an absolute legend in our sport. It was an honor to know him and spend time with him. Randy Pedersen, you will be missed by many."
The cause of Pedersen's death has not yet been confirmed. His passing leaves a significant gap in the bowling community, both for his competitive achievements and his memorable contributions to its televised presentation.
