Randle's Hustle Sets Tone in Nets' Preseason Victory Over 76ers
Veteran forward Julius Randle showcased leadership with aggressive play in Brooklyn's exhibition win.
Julius Randle led by example in the Brooklyn Nets' preseason victory over the Philadelphia 76ers, demonstrating hustle and defensive intensity that head coach Jordi Fernández has emphasized.
During the 114-108 win on Thursday night, Randle, a three-time All-Star, was observed diving for loose balls and applying full-court pressure. This effort from the 31-year-old veteran, who was acquired by the rebuilding Nets after being traded from the contending Minnesota Timberwolves, did not go unnoticed by his coach.
"I mean, you said it, three-time All-Star, has been in the playoffs multiple times, and he’s coming here and the first one to dive on the floor and to pick up full court," Fernández stated. "I couldn’t ask for a better leader and a better vet right there, or a grown-up — because obviously he’s not old. He’s a very young player."
Fernández praised Randle's play as contagious and a key component of "winning plays." He highlighted how Randle's actions, such as securing a loose ball leading to a score, significantly boosted the team's momentum and energy.
Randle concluded the game with a team-high 14 points, six rebounds, two steals, and two assists in 21 minutes of play. He also indicated that he and Fernández have discussed the possibility of him playing some small-ball center in certain offensive schemes.
Several players were sidelined for the contest, including Michael Porter Jr. (left wrist soreness), Day’Ron Sharpe (left shoulder soreness), Mikel Brown Jr. (ankle recovery), and Joshua Jefferson (lower back). Fernández expressed uncertainty about their availability for the upcoming game on Monday in Washington, stating that the team would assess their condition following a day off.
In other team news, the Nets have signed guard Dion Brown. Mo Wagner started in place of Sharpe and recorded a game-high four steals. Chaney Johnson also contributed defensively with two steals and two blocks, underscoring the team's focus on defense. Johnson, on a two-way contract, played center at 6-foot-8, showcasing his versatility as noted by Fernández, who described him as strong and capable of guarding multiple positions.
